Muriwai Super Sand Special Oct 2009

7 trucks mustered at cafe in Waimoocow, in order of venerability:- Leonard,
2 x 90s, and 4 Discos, of which one had been bought the night before in Hamilton (Phil) and another had only done one previous run and was still on road 205s (Keith).

Entered beach at Wilson's road at low tide and into the dunes further south than usual to follow some hunter's trails through the long grasses.

Aforementioned Disco pilots not done much sand driving before, but quickly warmed to the task.Took a while to get everyone over a 4m high wall of sand (where pic was taken)

[Ed's note: Spot the excellently large tyres...FAB weeps...!]

but got there eventually with a couple of tows, and so onwards into dunes proper beginning with a few laps of the race track, where Len's passenger also had his first ever go at driving.

Over the tops of trees we sped, down into the army training ground and back around to do the big dune descent before stopping for lunch.

Out to the lagoon after lunch, and a quick play in some proper mud before returning to the training ground for freestyle exploration culminating in a long soggy trail through the scrub with a nasty little sand bank and no run up at the end.

Many tows later and everybody was out and heading in the general direction of back, stopping for more descents of another large dune where the team "over the top" event took place.

Back out the way we came in, and back onto the beach 2 hrs after high tide at 6pm. Julian had already gone, but was waylaid winching two jappers back onto the firm stuff, and then towing them them out to Wilson's road.

Perfect weather and a good, small, enthusiastic group - great fun trip!
