Northland Fun Weekend.

Blair is the organiser: Let him know if you will be attending (regardless of the convoy stuff - see below)

Check these locations first for your own orientation/planning purposes:

1. Mitimiti region:  is here

2. The camp site/base meeting point at Rangi Point is here.

3. Rawene (for ferry from the mainland to Northland is here

We will be off-roading between Rangi Point towards and in/around Mitimiti

Travelling up North:

You have two options:

  1. Drive up Friday daytime  - go to Rangi Point - find:
The old school building. There are two buildings, the old schoolroom complete with mattresses and electricity, and the old schoolhouse which is like a small hall-big lounge style. You can sleep in or pitch a tent or whatever outside. Hot shower, for boys AND girls (sounds communal...).
Old commercial kitchen, bit basic but useable.Walk in chiller.

Whangarei Club people should be there by about 7:30pm (on Friday 3 July)

  2. Drive up Friday evening - go to Rawene/Omapere for overnight stay.
Rawene Motor camp: Stay here for $20 per head, shared cabin accommodation, double bed, single and bunks, will fit where we can.
Suggest that the Omapere Pub could be an option for dinner, bar meals only, restaurant closed due to large group. mains $22-25, cooking till 8.30-9pm.
Drive time to Omapere from Auckland is normally around 3-3.5 hours, and another 30 odd mins to Rawene.

Then: Saturday morning: Catch 08:45 ferry from Rawene - drive to Rangi Point.
    Arrive about 11am-ish

Friday Convoys - to suit Options 1 & 2 above:
  • Blair will be leaving Auckland at 4pm if people would like convoy to Omapere/Rawene - overnight there and then on to Rangi Point Saturday morning. Phone Blair 027-494-0016

  • Alternative:
If others are able to leave earlier and take the scenic route:
    Auckland - SH16 (Kumeu) - Wellsford - Brynderwen - (stop at Matakohe?) - Dargaville- Waipoua - etc - Omapere - Rawene - Ferry - Rangi Point.
Please contact Neil 021-2811509  - Convoy departing say midday Friday (Kumeu)

Off-Roading:
Not mud truck stuff but not totally shiny. We are guessing ATs will be OK.
Whangarei Club says, quote:

Tide dependent, but not in this order.North beach run;Harbour head and white mountain run;
Sandstone cliffs;Forest tracks
It's a bloody big area to get lost in and you may never emerge!
Will be back at camp for Saturday lunch.
The weather will be (could be)  miserably cold to freezing, extremely strong cold winds, seas of biblical proportions, foods, rain, pestilence, famine, muddy, etc. Hopefully the weather will be ok but expect otherwise! We can stay inside and tell stories or just get out there! The ground is pretty much sandstone or sand. Some pine forest travel (explorers stuff).
End quote.

Return : Sunday 5 July - sometime - assume we will have a run of some sort in the morning!

Food/bedding etc: take it all - and expect the unexpected...!

As said: Please let Blair know if you will be attending.

Blair: 027-494-0016 or 836-836 6322 - or via club mail system

Recommendation:

Sort out something re meeting/convoys/accommodation BEFORE leaving Auckland: It will be useless arriving in the middle of nowhere, with no phone coverage and trying to locate everyone!
